The prose poem as we know it today was “invented” as a type of subversive activity; to escape the rules of strict meter and rhyme that defined most poetry in the 19th century. Today the prose poem, while not broken into lines of verse, uses other techniques unique to poetry such as image, metaphor, and sound.

This generative workshop, conducted over a two-hour Zoom class period, will allow us to explore and experiment in writing prose poems and other forms that are constructed using blocks of prose, such as the haibun. Suitable for all writers, these classes can strengthen our skills as a poet, memoirist, and/or storyteller.

This class is suitable for all levels.
