The third workshop in our “Kentucky Voices Rising: Songs of Social Change” series.
Thursday, August 28, 6-7:30 PM
Join La’Shelle Allen (Sistah LaLa) for an inspiring exploration of African-American spirituals and gospel traditions. This educational program furthers the conversation around diversity in music and the contributions of underrepresented voices. Participants will understand the historical and cultural significance of Negro spirituals, explore music’s role in the lives of enslaved Africans, and identify key themes and messages within these powerful songs. The workshop includes collaborative songwriting and performance of classic spirituals such as “Down By The Riverside.”
Come discover how Kentucky’s musicians have shaped movements for justice, and add your voice to this continuing tradition!
Sponsored by The Kentucky Arts Council and The Kentucky Historical Society, and hosted by singer/songwriter and community organizer Carla Gover.
