This seminar is part of the Accents Originals Series held in partnership with Accents Publishing.
No matter what genre or style in which you write, you are writing about humans for modern humans. That means your characters have to be recognizable and memorable. No matter how surprising your plot twists are or how pretty your sentences look, it won’t matter without memorable characters. This class will use exercises to bring out the nuances and subtleties that will make your characters come alive. We’ll share our work and help each other deepen our stories through the people we put in them.
Willie Davis‘s writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Kenyon Review, Salon, storySouth, and The Berkeley Fiction Review, amongst other places. He is the winner of The Willesden Herald Review (judged by Zadie Smith) and the Katherine Ann Porter Prize (judged by Amy Hempel). He teaches English, Journalism, and Creative Writing at Kentucky State University. He is the author of the novel Nightwolf and the short story collection I Can Outdance Jesus. His most recent book, Honeysuckle Season, was the winner of the 2025 James Baker Hall Book Award.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
The Carnegie Center reserves the right to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met. It is best to register early to help our instructors prepare and to ensure the class does not get cancelled. We evaluate registration numbers 6–2 business days before a class starts to decide whether we can hold the class. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment will be cancelled six–two business days prior to the first class meeting. All participants will be notified by email and will receive full refunds
