During this course, we will explore the history and craft of sonnets and workshop participants’ writing. Alongside poetry skill-building exercises, we will read a variety of sonnets, classic and contemporary, for inspiration in our own writing. This class will be an opportunity to learn – or relearn – the rules and guidelines of the sonnet, as well as the infinite possibilities for experimentation, adaptation, and reinvention with this classic, yet ever-evolving form.
Jay McCoy is a queer Appalachian multimedia artist working in poetry, creative nonfiction, and mixed media collage. He currently serves as the Director of Literary Arts Programs with Kentucky Humanities and co-hosts the weekly Kentucky Writers Roundtable radio show on MediaLex Radio. His new poetry collection, Wings Crafted from Propeller Blades, will be out this fall from Broadstone Books.
Cancellation Policy:
The Carnegie Center reserves the right to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met. It is best to register early to help our instructors prepare and to ensure the class does not get cancelled. We evaluate registration numbers between 6 and 2 business days before a class starts to decide whether we can hold the class. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment may be cancelled a minimum of two business days prior to the first class meeting. All participants will be notified by email and will receive full refunds.
