Every place has a story, and every story has a place. We will begin this class by exploring how other cartographers have used their craft to tell stories, and end it by creating our own storytelling maps using both physical and digital media. The curriculum of this class encourages genre-bending, rule-breaking, and creative expression even as students build a repertoire of fundamental mapmaking skills.
Students for this class should have their own portable device capable of running QGIS, a free, open-source mapping software. You can view the download instructions here: https://qgis.org/download/. If you have any concerns about this requirement, please contact the instructor at lmcallister@carnegiecenterlex.org.
This class is suitable for all levels.
Liam McAllister is a geographer with an M.A. from the University of Kentucky; his research investigates the complex, emotional geographies of belonging in Kentucky and beyond.
