Camp Carnegie

Camp Carnegie is a series of six educational, half-day camps for rising sixth through eighth grade students at the Carnegie Center. Experienced, passionate instructors lead fun, hands-on activities at the Carnegie Center while field trips and visits with community leaders deepen learning experiences. Camps encourage summer learning and teach life skills or introduce campers to fascinating fields that could lead to future careers.

Each camp registration fee is $100. The fee is $25 for students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Lunch is provided for full-day campers.

The Week of July 7

MORNING
Character Creation: Writing and Crocheting Your Character with Maddie Mitchell

This class offers a unique opportunity for both creative writing and crafting. Students will first draft their short story and then learn to crochet their main character plush. 

Instructor Bio

Maddie is a poet, writer, and crochet artist who strives to constantly engage in the arts. She enjoys sharing her crafting knowledge with young people while helping them to find their own inspirations. She hopes to encourage others to find passion in creative outlets and search for opportunities to spread joy through art.

AFTERNOON
Folklore and Foxfire: Appalachian Storytelling with frankie sisman

Campers will try out different forms of storytelling and incorporate them into each other. Students will write, perform engaging stories based in the history of the region. They will also learn about oral storytelling traditions and create their own folktales.

The Week of July 14

MORNING
Puppetry in Motion with SJ Jacobs

Campers will design and craft their own puppets! Students will learn the tricks to bringing their creation to life, and help them express their creativity through this unique art form.

Hi, I’m SJ. I’m a theatre teacher and creative based out of Lexington, KY. I have experience in puppetry, playwriting, performance, and design. I enjoy creating engaging curriculum that encourages students to use their strengths and talents while building an ensemble and working as a team.

AFTERNOON
Playmakers: Creating Theatre with Matthew Belopavlovich

Are you the kind of artist that loves to do it all? Participants of this course will receive instruction in playwriting, directing, and acting as they turn an original idea into a scripted piece of theatre. Let your creative writing skills shine as you draft dialogue and imagination soar as you bring characters to life during a staged reading. No acting experience is required.

Instructor Bio

“Matthew Belopavlovich holds a BFA in acting from UW-Milwaukee, master’s degree in theatre from Regent University, and graduate certificate in autism spectrum disorder advocacy from Lesley University. He spent a decade teaching and directing students at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory before joining the independent school community, Television credits include MTV’s The Inbetweeners and Nat Geo’s The Right Stuff. He was able to live out his childhood dream of performing as a clown with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey for two years. He currently serves as the middle school drama teacher at Sayre School in Kentucky.

MORNING
Spark Your Creativity Through Writing with Carol June Franks

Writing is all about thinking differently, using your imagination, and getting your creative thoughts down on paper. And writing can be fun! During this course, students will participate in a variety of creative writing activities, including starting a writer’s notebook, descriptive writing, writing poetry, and more.

Instructor bio

Carol June Franks is a retired teacher who has begun a new adventure as a children’s book author. During her teaching career, she taught middle school language arts, science, and reading intervention and worked as a literacy consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education. She credits her experience with the Louisville Writing Project (LWP) for her love of writing and for teaching writing

AFTERNOON
Inktales with Bryce Oquaye 

Using sequential art and illustration, make your ideas come to life on the page. In this camp, Bryce returns to Camp Carnegie to help students express their creativity through art and comic illustrations. Students learn pacing and plotting tricks to take their creations to the next level.

Instructor Bio

Bryce Oquaye is an illustrator, comic artist and animator. His comic and graffiti styled approach have placed him within a wide range of projects. From comic to cover art for publishers like Z2 Comics, illustration for Zox and Netflix, and animation for companies like Group Nine Media, Bryce has placed a focus on story based illustration and sequential work.
