Manuscript Consulting

Do you have a complete manuscript draft in need of fresh eyes, a careful read, and constructive content feedback? Carnegie’s Manuscript Consulting Service may be for you.

Drafts should be at or near completion and should be submitted electronically as Word documents (double-spaced, 12-point standard font). Manuscripts will be returned electronically in the form of a detailed summary, and in some cases, the consultant’s margin notes, approximately two weeks to one month after submission.

We will do our best to match you with a manuscript consultant. However, we cannot guarantee a match due to genre constraints, limited number of consultants, and limited availability of slots per consultant. To see manuscript consultant bios, click here.

The Manuscript Consulting service offers big-picture content editing, NOT copy editing. It is offered as a cut-and-dry, single electronic exchange and is different from the Carnegie Center’s Writing Mentor service, which pairs writers with mentors in a manner designed to encourage in-person and/or ongoing conversation.

How it works:

  • Complete interest form and required attachments.
  • Send completed interest form and attachments to lwhitaker@carnegiecenterlex.org with MANUSCRIPT CONSULTATION in the subject line. We will send a quick reply to acknowledge receipt and begin attempting to match you with a preferred consultant.
  • We will email you within ten business days about the progress of your match.
  • If we find a consultant match for you, we will send you an agreement form detailing cost, timeline, and our commitments to you.  Of course, the decision whether or not to sign the agreement form and begin the manuscript consulting process is up to you after receiving this information.

Investment:

  • $75/hour ($50/hour for people in need of financial assistance; please include this request for financial assistance in your initial email)
  • The total number of hours depends on word count and other factors. Upon being matched with a consultant, you will receive an agreement form that will detail the timeline and final cost. Of course, the decision whether or not to sign the agreement form and begin the manuscript consulting process is up to you after receiving this information.
