Black & Lit Book Club: May
Black & Lit Book Club features new books by Black Kentucky writers. This reading group is open to anyone wanting to attend, not only KBWC members. When possible, we will meet with the author. This book club session will be hosted by JC McPherson, Carnegie’s Kentucky Black Writers Collaborative (KBWC) Associate.
The KBWC Black & Lit Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of every other month on Zoom. The first 25 registrants each month receive a free copy of the selected book. Sponsored by the Fund for the Arts and the Kentucky Humanities.
May's Black & Lit Book Club Selection: Don't You Fall Now by KBWC Coordinator Claudia Love Mair
About the book: Don’t You Fall Now is a hauntingly beautiful family memoir that tells the story of how the author’s eighteen-year-old son, Kamau Burney, survived a jump from a six story parking structure near the campus of the University of Kentucky. Kamau landed face first, shattering all the bones in his face, along with breaking his hip, clavicle, and neck. His survival was a miracle. Mair’s story is a lyrical exploration of what it means for a mentally ill mother to care for a mentally ill and brain injured son. Told in sparse prose, the chapters are intentionally short, meditative, and intense. The result is a riveting story that is raw, real, and ultimately hopeful.
