SUMMARY:Writing Toward a Sense of Place with Tony Crunk
DESCRIPTION:A distinctive trait of much memorable writing is its (and its author’s) “sense of place.” But any “place” is much more than just its geographical location—it is also defined by history and culture\, ecology and economics\, sociology and ethnography\, all of which may have intensely personal\, as well as familial and communal dimensions. Through a series of directed exercises and workshop discussions of drafted works\, we will explore and develop in our writing the many-faceted “sense” that is “place.” The workshop is multi-genre– writers working in any genre and all genres are warmly invited\, as are writers of any and all levels. \nThis class is suitable for writers of all levels. \nTony Crunk’s first collection of poetry\, Living in the Resurrection\, was a selection in the Yale Series of Younger Poets; he has published numerous subsequent works\, and has taught at the Universities of Virginia\, Montana\, and Alabama/Birmingham\, as well as in a number of community education programs across the country.\nThis class is suitable for all levels. \nONLINE: Monday\, May 11\, 6:00–8:00 PM\, • $35.00 [ALL LEVELS]

SUMMARY:Revision as a Poet's Superpower with Tom C. Hunley
DESCRIPTION:A draft of a poem isn’t a broken thing that needs to be fixed. It’s not a clear\, rational argument that needs a little cleaning up\, a little editing. It’s a missive from another world that has thus far been only partially-translated. Or\, as writes Philip Metres in The Art of Losing (and other Visions of Revision)\, “Your work is not full of mistakes\, and it’s not broken. It’s just not itself yet”. \nA draft is nothing but the ingredients for a poem\, lined up and waiting for the skilled chef to go to work. But there’s no definitive recipe\, either\, because each poem\, if it’s good\, is a new thing that has never existed yet. It’s a bird\, not a birdhouse\, as Dean Young tells us in The Art of Recklessness. A poem is something wild and mysterious that is trying to be born\, and your arsenal of revision skills may make the difference\, for the poem\, between living and dying. \nPlease note – This is an online revision workshop\, so please bring a draft of a poem. \nPart of the Accents Originals Series in partnership with Accents Publishing \nRegister through Accents: https://bit.ly/revision_superpower \nTuesday\, May 12\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $40.00

SUMMARY:Vibrantly Grey
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to host the reception for Vibrantly Grey project\, an art exhibit curated by On The Move Art Studio! \nThrough this project\, women ages 55 and up explored powerful themes like wisdom\, identity\, and memory by creating framed quotes\, expressive self portraits\, and personal memory paintings. \nThese art experiences created space to learn new skills\, share stories of aging\, and challenge assumptions by celebrating the voices\, creativity\, and value of older women in our community. The work reflects not only artistic growth\, but also the lived experiences\, perspectives\, and strength of the participants. \nJoin us for the reception on May 21 from 5 to 7 PM at the Carnegie Center for light snacks and an opportunity to experience this incredible collection in person. The full gallery will be on display from May 5 through May 29\, so we encourage you to stop by and take it all in.\nWe would love to see you there!
