DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Writers Walk is a downtown walking tour\, led by Tom Eblen\, highlighting more than two centuries of the city’s literary giants on Kentucky Writers Day\, Thursday April 24. \nThe tour is free and will begin at 6:30 pm in Gratz Park behind the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning. \nTom Eblen is a former Lexington Herald-Leader columnist and managing editor who now coordinates the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame\, a joint project of the Carnegie Center and the Kentucky Arts Council. \nEblen developed the walking tour in 2021 for the Carnegie Center and VisitLex\, and wrote an illustrated self-guided tour booklet that has been available since then at the city’s Visitors Center in Courthouse Square. An audio version of the walking tour is planned for Summer 2025. \nThe Carnegie Center is a recipient of a 250LEX Community Grant\, supporting several new and expanded literary programs.

DESCRIPTION:The Larkspur Press: The Power of Print in Kentucky exhibit will feature broadsides from the Carnegie Center collection. \nLeatha Kendrick will be conducting a reading with audience Q&A afterward from 6:30-7:00. \nOur March Gallery Hop event is an exhibit of broadsides presented in partnership with Institute 193. \nWhat is a broadside? The Library of Congress defines it as “single sheets of paper\, printed on one side only…broadsides are intended to have an immediate popular impact and then to be thrown away.” \nFriday\, March 21 from 5pm to 7pm in the Skydome Gallery \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT\nLeatha Kendrick is a poet\, writer\, editor and teacher. Her poems and essays appear widely in journals including Appalachian Journal\, Hood of Bone\, Rattle\, Tar River Poetry\, New Madrid Review\, Southern Poetry Review\, Appalachian Review\, and Baltimore Review. \nLarkspur Press publishes small-batch\, handcrafted works. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host the commencement for the 2025 Lexington Youth Poet Laureate on January 31 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. \nThe ceremony will feature keynote speaker Katerina Stoykova and Youth Poet Laureate finalists Eva Alcarez Monje\, Mady Dinh\, Tony Robinson\, Meredith Sither and Esme Morris. \nJudges for the program are Meg Whalen\, Deidra White\, Sean Corbin and Katerina Stoyakova. \nThis prestigious program\, in partnership with Urban Word NYC and the Kentucky Arts Council\, is designed to honor young writers and leaders in Kentucky between the ages of 13-18\, who are committed to making a civic impact through community engagement utilizing the power of their written and spoken words. We strongly believe that when we honor young people and give them this kind of office\, the community is more likely to listen to what they have to say.

SUMMARY:Young Writers Project 2025: APPLICATION DEADLINE January 17
DESCRIPTION:The Carnegie Center invites young women and nonbinary writers in grades 9–12 to apply to the Young Writers Project\, a FREE series of intensive workshops focused on creative self-expression through writing. The selected group of participants will attend seven sessions (at the link below). In these workshops\, experienced writers in their 20s and 30s will mentor on a variety of genres\, encouraging participants to look within themselves for issues that are important in their lives. Participants will also learn techniques to deliver an effective literary reading and other business-of-writing tips. The program will culminate in a public reading and a Writing Mentor Day.
