SUMMARY:Like a Hermit Crab: Exploring Homes (Forms) for Creative Nonfiction with Leigh Claire Schmidli
DESCRIPTION:As hermit crabs are creatures born without a home\, they investigate hollow objects\, looking for that perfect fit. For this generative workshop\, we’ll explore different homes for our creative nonfiction—using non-literary structures like recipes\, letters & lists\, official forms & “how-to’s.” We’ll look at examples by established and emerging writers\, and discuss the ways that found forms can add resonance to our writing and give us new freedom of expression\, especially with difficult or vulnerable subject matter. Then we’ll try out a new form of our own. Perhaps we’ll explore new homes for old work or maybe we’ll generate new writing—for those narratives we didn’t realize we’d been sheltering. \nThis class is suitable for all levels. \nLeigh Claire Schmidli teaches Creative Writing at Eastern Kentucky University and often leads writing workshops for the Kentucky Foundation for Women and other non-profits. Her poetry\, fiction\, and lyric essays have appeared in such places as Ruminate Magazine\, Phoebe\, and the Los Angeles Review. \nMonday\, March 16\, 5:15–7:15 PM • $35.00

SUMMARY:Prosing Your Way Through Poetry: Writing the Prose Poem with Marianne Worthington
DESCRIPTION:The prose poem as we know it today was “invented” as a type of subversive activity; to escape the rules of strict meter and rhyme that defined most poetry in the 19th century. Today the prose poem\, while not broken into lines of verse\, uses other techniques unique to poetry such as image\, metaphor\, and sound. \nThis generative workshop\, conducted over a two-hour Zoom class period\, will allow us to explore and experiment in writing prose poems and other forms that are constructed using blocks of prose\, such as the haibun. Suitable for all writers\, these classes can strengthen our skills as a poet\, memoirist\, and/or storyteller. \nThis class is suitable for all levels. \nMarianne Worthington is the author of two poetry collections\, an editor\, and an educator who lives\, writes and teaches in southeastern Kentucky. \nONLINE: Tuesday\, February 17\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $35.00 [ALL LEVELS] \n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Write What You Don't Know: Immersion Poetics with Lynnell Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Write What You Don’t Know: A Workshop in Immersion Poetics with Lynnell Edwards \n***This class has been postponed. Please contact Accents with questions.*** \nThough we’re rightly inspired to write about the things we know best\, sometimes looking out and around to the worlds we don’t know brings opportunities for expansive new poetry. Sustained attention and engagement in defined environments\, whether they be studios\, workspaces\, institutions for healing or helping\, brings us new words\, new ways of being\, and even new forms for our poems. In this workshop we’ll look at how we can\, by immersing ourselves as observers and even participants in environments both beyond our comfort zone as well as close to home\, we can discover new subjects for our poems. We’ll look closely at the forms and styles in the work of several poets who have done just this and we’ll write from prompts designed to jump start our thinking about what we know and what we’d like to know more about. \nPart of the Accents Originals Series in partnership with Accents Publishing \nTuesday\, February 10\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $40.00 \nRegister through Accents: https://bit.ly/immersion_poetics

SUMMARY:Other Voices Lost & Found: Crafting the Historical Persona Poem with Cecilia Woloch
DESCRIPTION:Material for poems is everywhere – including in personal and historical archives. In this workshop\, we’ll discuss how other voices — drawn from testimonies\, transcripts\, letters and other “found” materials – can be used to craft poems-of-witness and historical persona poems. We’ll read and discuss literary models\, exchange ideas for subjects and approaches\, and then participants will be led into a writing exercise in which materials-at-hand and imagination are combined to draft a poem in the voice of someone from the past\, whether a historical figure or an ancestor. \nClick Link to Register through Accents Publishing \nTuesday\, October 28\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $40

SUMMARY:Approaching the Divine: Poetry as Spiritual Practice with Jeremy Paden
DESCRIPTION:Join Jeremy Paden\, author of how to recognize god’s chosen\, for an exploration of poetry as spiritual practice. Both song and prayer are\, perhaps\, our earliest forms of poetry\, and both give voice to our deepest longings. Both are also central in most religious practices. The word religion comes from religio. While Augustine proposes that religio come from religare\, to bind again or to bind fast\, Cicero states it comes from re-legere\, to re-read or to read with care. In this workshop\, we will focus on Cicero’s notion of reading and rereading: (re)reading the self\, (re)reading the world\, (re)reading other spiritual poets. Participants will be provided with an anthology of poems\, as well as and reading and writing prompts that engage those poems with an eye toward writing new poems. \nClick Link to Register through Accents Publishing \nThursday\, October 9\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $40

SUMMARY:Crossing the Line: Increasing Poetic Impact with Lineation with Jay McCoy
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will consider the powerful poetic device of lineation in some of its various forms – specifically line length\, enjambment\, and end stops. By reviewing and discussing examples and trying out different techniques\, participants will explore how a poet’s conscious decision on how to move from line to line can impact a poem’s rhythm\, meaning\, and overall effect. Since lineation generally does not have hard and fast rules\, poets must decide how and when to break or end a line intentionally and effectively. The workshop will conclude with timed prompts for participants to try out discussed techniques with an opportunity to share.   \nClick Link to Register through Accents Publishing \nThursday\, September 25\, 6:00–8:00 PM • $40
