For this generative workshop\, we’ll explore different homes for our creative nonfiction—using non-literary structures like recipes\, letters & lists\, official forms & “how-to’s.” We’ll look at examples by established and emerging writers\, and discuss the ways that found forms can add resonance to our writing and give us new freedom of expression\, especially with difficult or vulnerable subject matter. Then we’ll try out a new form of our own. DESCRIPTION:The prose poem as we know it today was “invented” as a type of subversive activity; to escape the rules of strict meter and rhyme that defined most poetry in the 19th century. Today the prose poem\, while not broken into lines of verse\, uses other techniques unique to poetry such as image\, metaphor\, and sound. \nThis generative workshop\, conducted over a two-hour Zoom class period\, will allow us to explore and experiment in writing prose poems and other forms that are constructed using blocks of prose\, such as the haibun. In this workshop\, we’ll discuss how other voices — drawn from testimonies\, transcripts\, letters and other “found” materials – can be used to craft poems-of-witness and historical persona poems.
