Gender & Place in Appalachian Literature – Summer 2020

This class will combine formal and informal methods of discussion and instruction to explore the role of place and gender in Strange as This Weather Has Been by Ann Pancake and Dimestore: A Writer’s Life by Lee Smith. The class will conclude with a short creative response using writing or a different artistic medium. Be prepared to read and purchase the books for the course. Hannah D. Markley earned an MA in Teaching English and Intercultural Studies and is the 2019-2020 Hindman Settlement School Creative Writing Fellow of Place. She is an MFA candidate in Creative Writing at Pacific Lutheran University.
