The hermit crab essay is a nonfiction essay in which the writer adopts an existing form to contain their writing (think: to-do lists, instruction manuals, dating profiles, and more). In this class, we will read examples of the hermit crab essay, dissect their mechanics, and uncover their truths. We will produce and workshop our own hermit crab essay that uses an unexpected form to examine our own experiences.

Lucy Jayes holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from the University of Kentucky where she won the 2022 award in Creative Nonfiction, as well as Fourth Genre’s Multimedia Essay contest in 2023.

This class is suitable for all levels.
