Subtext, the true meaning simmering underneath the surface, adds depth and layers of meaning to our scenes. Often what’s missing in the text is the most important part—the motives, thoughts, emotions, and human truths that resonate with multiple meanings. Using examples from multiple popular works of fiction, we’ll look at the many ways to use subtext in theme, setting, characterization, dialogue, and symbols to add meaning beneath the words.
Laurie Calkhoven, an Author Accelerator certified Book Coach, is the author of more than 50 books for young readers, ranging from beginner readers through young adult. Many of her novels have appeared on state reading lists.
This class is suitable for intermediate level writers.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

The Carnegie Center reserves the right to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met. It is best to register early to help our instructors prepare and to ensure the class does not get cancelled. We evaluate registration numbers 6–2 business days before a class starts to decide whether we can hold the class. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment will be cancelled six–two business days prior to the first class meeting. All participants will be notified by email and will receive full refunds.
