Camp Carnegie 2018


Calling all middle school students! Don’t miss your chance to take part in one of Lexington’s favorite camps.

Camp Carnegie is a series of half-day, one-week summer camps for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grades. These hands-on, educational camps are taught by instructors with field experience in the camp topic.

Do you have a story to tell? A point-of-view that’s creative and different? Join us for a week of radio magic as we create and launch a podcast, step-by-step. Learn to write scripts, record audio, and produce broadcast and web-worthy content. By the end of the week, you’ll write, record and edit your own podcast. You’ll learn how to prepare your podcast for distribution and how to promote your podcast to listeners around the world.

Young Engineers 
July 9-13, 1:00-5:00 pm
with Hannah Paine, science teacher

Not all scientists are created equal. How might you use your wit and creativity to solve unique challenges with limited supplies and time? Using NASA’s Engineering Design Process, you and your team will explore multiple engineering challenges. Throughout the week, you will improve your designs and take part in exciting engineering competitions against other teams!

Fashion Design & Sewing 
July 16-20, 8:30 am-12:30 pm
with Soreyda Benedit Begley, fashion designer

Join us for a fashion adventure! First, we will learn about different textiles and types of fabrics. Then we will get hands-on practice with basic sewing techniques, as well as screen-printing, iron-on appliques, embroidery, and other decorative techniques. We will learn about fashion trends and make our own fashion-forward look from found materials. At the end of the week, you will share your look with family and friends at our own fashion show!

Junior Journalists
July 16-20, 1:00-5:00 pm
with Cynthia Spataro, MBA in Media Management

Calling all reporters! Learn all about the field of journalism while working with your fellow campers to create a digital news journal that will be posted online for friends and family to explore. Whether it’s writing a sports column or filming a video about current events in your neighborhood, you’ll have a chance to delve into and share the topics that most interest you!

Top Chef: What’s Cooking? (SOLD OUT)
July 23-27, 8:30 am-12:30 pm
with Sara Talbott, UK Human Environmental Sciences

Top Chef is filming in Lexington soon, so join us this summer for our own cooking adventure modeled after their hit show! We will explore nutrition, recipe writing, and menu planning. We’ll also talk about gardening, learn where our food comes from, and visit the Lexington Farmers’ Market and local nonprofit FoodChain. At the end of the week, we will compete in our very own top chef challenge!

Week at the Museum
July 23-27, 1:00-5:00 pm
with Amelia Collins, Camp Carnegie Coordinator

This week, the Carnegie Center will transform into the Carnegie Museum as campers become curators of their very own art exhibits! Throughout the week, we will explore different types of art, step into the shoes of our favorite artists, learn about the process of curating an exhibit, and pay a visit to a real art gallery. The week will culminate in a “gallery opening” where campers will have the opportunity to share what they’ve learned with friends and family.
