All camps are taught by instructors with field experience in the camp topic. Participation is limited to 25 students per camp. Inquire at the front desk or call for more information. Payment reserves the participant’s space in the camp. Don’t miss out! See why we were voted #1 Best Academic Camp by 11,000 Lexington Family Magazine readers in 2010!
COST: $60 per camp. A reduced price of $20 per camp is available for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Lunch is provided for all-day campers. Sign up for one camp, two camps, or even all six! Call 859-254-4175 or visit the Carnegie Center front desk to register!
Farmer for a Week: Five Mornings at an Urban Garden— Ryan Koch and Rebecca Self, Seedleaf
July 11-15, 8:30am – 12:30pm
Ever wonder what it’s like to be a farmer? Would you like to help your family and friends create their own gardens or grow their own food? Join the staff of Seedleaf in the London Ferrell Community Garden as you learn about sowing seeds, compost and soil health, good bugs vs. bad bugs, proper watering, and harvesting. And of course you’ll have the chance to eat the food that YOU help grow! We’ll be walking to the gardens and we’ll be outside during some summer heat, so dress to get hot and dirty!
Kentucky Imaginarium: An Exploration of Theatre at Balagula Theatre
July 11-15, 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Join Lexington’s own Balagula Theatre and the Kentucky Historical Society Museum as you learn about Kentucky tales and what makes them unique to our state. We’ll look at a tale from another culture and “translate” it into a Kentucky folk tale. We’ll then present the tale using different forms of theatre (storytelling, puppet theatre, and drama theatre). Learn the basics of shadow theatre, puppet making, and acting, all while working with real theatre artists and instructors!
Fantastic Lexington: Writing New Worlds—Randi Ewing
July 18-22, 8:30am – 12:30pm
What if Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was actually in downtown Lexington? What if the door to Narnia was somewhere in the Carnegie Center? Imagine what worlds might be lurking right around the corner if we only had the keys to unlock them and put them onto the page. In this camp, come create your own fantasy realm. We’ll learn how to create fantasy worlds out of the plants, shadows and shapes that surround us. Using prompts from places around downtown Lexington and powerful writing tools like description and characterization, we’ll invent and write about new, fantastic realms.
Creative Cooking: A Feast with the Least— Johanna Schafer
July 18-22, 1:00pm – 5:00pm
No kitchen? No problem! Stretch your imagination and practice creativity as you experience hands-on food preparation and incorporate problem solving into meal-time. From snacks to main courses, learn to use some small, relatively inexpensive cooking equipment in a whole new way. Whether you see the culinary field in your future or you just want to be prepared to make nutritious meals at home for your friends, come enjoy the making and tasting of creative cooking! Thanks to our generous sponsor: STOLL KEENON OGDEN!!!
Music & Lyrics: “If I Could Write You a Song”—Matthew Haughton
July 25-29, 8:30am – 12:30pm
Get in the mindset of your musical idol, and learn to write music of your own! This camp will explore creative writing in response to music, writing original lyrics, and we’ll even create some music with instruments we have on hand (or those we can make from household materials). We’ll also hear from popular guest musicians from various backgrounds – classical to hip-hop – to share their expertise. Not a musician? No worries! This class is great for aspiring writers, too!
Carnegie Comics: Cartoon Creation from the Ground Up—Stephen Moore
July 25-29, 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Whether you are a fan of Marvel comic superheroes like Iron Man, Manga Japanese comics, graphic novels, or simply reading the comics in the daily paper, this camp is for you! Together, we’ll learn about every aspect of cartooning and creating sequential art, from writing and editing to drawing, lettering, and printing. Use your own skills and see how teamwork is important in creating original comics – with pens, paper, and even computers! Please come with a creative mind, and be ready to take home copies of what you and your group create!
