Book Benches: A Tribute to Kentucky Authors is a collaborative project among Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning. Modeled after Horsemania, thirty-seven book-shaped functional benches, each illustrated and themed around different works by Kentucky authors, are placed throughout Lexington for the duration of summer 2018 to celebrate Kentucky’s literary heritage, to encourage reading and provide a place for rest.
There will be a final celebration and auction of benches in November at The Livery. Proceeds from this will go to further the missions of Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning.
Now it’s your turn to get creative with the Book Benches! Kentucky photographers are invited to submit fun, imaginative and quality photos of the Lexington Book Benches. Grab a prop, set a scene, or catch a candid. Capture the magic of storytelling and be eligible to win cash prizes.
“Critically Acclaimed” (decided by guest judge): $500 prize
“Best Seller” (voted for with Facebook “likes”): $250 prize
Deadline to submit: Friday, October 5, midnight
Can you spot a sippy cup, a blue whale, and a dragonfly on the Lexington Book Benches? Grab your little ones, family, and friends, and hit the streets of Lexington in search of children’s/YA Book Benches. Find each image, and then bring the completed list to the Carnegie Center for a special prize!
Suggested for ages 5-10. Prizes may be claimed beginning Friday, August 10. The last day to claim prizes is October 5.
