The 2019 Books-in-Progress Conference, featuring award-winning author Chris Offutt (Country Dark, Out of the Woods, The Same River Twice, and My Father the Pornographer) as the keynote is May 30-June 1, 2019, with optional pre-conference sessions and a welcome reception.

Immerse yourself in craft and business workshops led by top authors and writing professionals, including Hannah PittardMargaret Verble, Gwenda Bond, and Writer’s Digest editor Jessica Strawser. Topics include revision, fiction, nonfiction, YA, publishing, and more.

The EARLY BIRD (register by April 15) rate is $175 ($150 for students) plus optional add-ons.

The Carnegie Books-in-Progress Conference also offers participants once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to pitch their book ideas to literary agents from New York City. This year, we are excited to features agents Justin Brouckaert, Aevitas Creative Management, and Joanna MacKenzie, Nelson Literary Agency.

  • Additional $75 for the pre-conference retreat (see below)
  • Additional $25 for a one-on-one session with a literary agent (see below)

Cancellation Policy: $50 of the conference fee is non-refundable. No refunds after May 11. No refunds can be issued for add-ons (literary agent meeting, pre-conference retreat).

Pre-Conference Retreat

Thursday, May 30, 10:00 am-5:00 pm: Begin your morning with movement and inspiration in a Writing & Yoga class. Enjoy an afternoon learning about Starting & Finishing Your Novel with 2018 Conference favorite author Ian Stansel. Lunch on your own (12:00-1:00 pm).

Welcome Reception

Free for Conference participants

Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 pm: Come meet your fellow conference-goers and even some of the presenters. We will open check-in early for all those who join us, nibble on food-by-the bite, and sip on wine, bourbon, and beer. At 6:30 pm, enjoy being part of the audience for the Carnegie Center Author Academy Class of 2019 Reading and Commencement Ceremony.
